Our Origin & Evolution

Proudly Mexican-Caribbean and rooted in Quintana Roo, we are Cozumeleños — shaped by salt, sun, and the living reef that surrounds us. Our purpose is simple, but deep: to serve our people, to advance marine prosperity in Mexico, and to protect the ocean that connects us all.

Ex Mare Venimus — From the Sea, We Come.

Sub Culture did not begin as a business. It began as a current — something older, something that existed long before we ever surfaced. Our story flows from the water itself, carried through two distinct journeys that would one day meet beneath the same tide.

One current begins with Cubano. His path took shape in his other island home, Cuba, where he moved within the rhythms of tourism and service as a Red Cross lifeguard. It was there, between shorelines and open water, that he first learned to breathe beneath the surface. That single moment became a lifelong immersion — a 35-year journey guided by the pulse of the Caribbean, eventually anchoring him in Cozumel.

The other current belongs to Cris. Her path moved across the global intersections of water, human rights, and advocacy — navigating complex systems while always remaining connected to something deeper. More than 18 years ago, her journey brought her to Cozumel, where she found not just a place, but a purpose. Since then, she has continued to move with intention, leading community initiatives that protect the island’s environment, its people, and the identity that binds them together.

These two paths — shaped by experience, guided by water — converged.

In 2017, that convergence gave life to Punta Sur Divers, born from years of working within the local dive community and a shared desire to do things differently. But as the tides shifted, so did the vision.

In 2025, we descended deeper. Beyond business. Beyond function. Into purpose.

We evolved into Sub Culture.

Sub Culture is not just a name — it is a reflection of who we are and what we believe. It is a community formed under pressure, shaped by currents, and grounded in the understanding that the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is not just a destination, but a sanctuary — and a teacher.

Everything we do flows from that belief.

We are guided by the ocean’s rhythms.
We are connected by its depth.
We are responsible for its future.

Because this is more than where we work or a job.
This is where we come from. Our identity, our livelihood.

It’s incredible what you’re building. All your experience and journey have come together into something truly meaningful, not just offering diving, snorkeling, and certifications, but also giving back to the community and the island through your commitment to conservation.
